Frequently asked questions

LIGHT ENTREPRENEURSHIP

What is a light entrepreneur?
Is light entrepreneurship suitable for me?

If you’re an adult and you want to try entrepreneurship without risk, be your own boss, and get more flexibility in your life without worrying about applications and paperwork, light entrepreneurship is for you. As a light entrepreneur, you can also compete for commissions and receive a better compensation than you would as an employee.

Which professions are suitable for invoicing through Laskutan.com?
Light entrepreneurship is suitable for most professions and situations. Here are a few examples:
freelancer, builder and renovator, expert, blogger, graphic designer, photographer, performing artist, housekeeper, translator, affiliate income, musician, programmer, personal trainer, retiree, and cleaner
There are only a few licensed professions that can’t be invoiced through our service. Below you can find information on what can’t be invoiced through us.
Which professions are not suitable for invoicing through Laskutan.com?
Health services
Acting as an entrepreneur in the healthcare sector is only possible under your own business ID. This means that you need to have your own business name. The provision of licensed health services is therefore not possible as a light entrepreneur.
Transportation services
If the total mass of your vehicle is 2,000–3,500.00 kg, you need have your own business ID and a valid traffic licence. You also need to make a freight traffic notification. Because you need to have your own business ID for this, you can’t operate as a light entrepreneur.
Real estate brokering
Real estate brokering can only be carried out by a private trader or legal entity registered as a real estate agency. This means that you can’t operate as a light entrepreneur.
Am I an entrepreneur or an employee?

Authorities see light entrepreneurs as entrepreneurs even though you receive your payments as wages on your bank account. As a light entrepreneur, you are your own boss, and you can also compete for commissions and receive a better compensation than you would as an employee. Entrepreneurship gives you a lot of freedom, as you get to choose how much work you want to do and set your own schedules.

On the other hand, entrepreneurship also brings with it some responsibilities. In a traditional employment relationship, the employer takes care of the official payments, but entrepreneurs must handle these on their own. As a light entrepreneur, you can easily manage them through the Laskutan.com service.

A light entrepreneur is responsible for the following official payments:
  • Value added tax (usually 24%)
  • Health insurance contribution (1.53%)
  • Tax prepayment according to your tax card
  • YEL insurance if you invoice more than €8063.57 per year
Even though you don’t need to have your own business ID as a light entrepreneur, invoicing still requires a business ID. Our service will provide you with a business ID for invoicing.

Because light entrepreneurs are considered entrepreneurs, their unemployment security is slightly different from employees.

When you use the Laskutan.com service, in addition to invoicing, possible debt collection and accident insurance, we also take care of the above-mentioned tax and health insurance payments as well as any related paperwork and the required business ID. YEL insurance is the only thing you need to take care of yourself when you work as a light entrepreneur through our service.

Our invoicing system takes into account all official requirements, and we can help you, for example, in choosing the right VAT rate for your products or services. Feel free to get to know the system before making your decision to become a light entrepreneur.

Light entrepreneur, private trader, or company – what’s the best choice for me?

It’s great that you’re considering your choices! There isn’t one correct answer to this question. The profitability of a business depends on many things, such as turnover and the amount of fixed and variable costs. There can be a lot of costs involved, for example, in outsourcing administrative tasks.

If you work part-time or do individual gigs, light entrepreneurship is probably the best choice. Our service fee is always paid separately for each transaction, which means there are no running monthly fees, which you would have as a private trader. When starting a company, there’s always more bureaucracy and financial risk involved.

If you’re considering becoming a full-time entrepreneur, it might be a good idea to start out as a light entrepreneur to test your business idea risk-free. Once your business is properly up and running and you have found enough customers, you can easily switch to working as a private trader any time. There’s no need to cancel your light entrepreneurship, because there are no regular payments or obligations.

Our service fee (5%*) includes:
  • Comprehensive invoicing and payroll service
  • Easy-to-use system for creating invoices, simple even for inexperienced users
  • Management of official matters and fees**
  • Accident and liability insurance
  • Phone service for initial planning
  • Tons of information and useful forms
*You can easily calculate the amount of our service fee using the formula 0.05 x the sum of your invoice before VAT. There are no other fees.

**If your invoicing amounts to more than €8063.57 per year, you need to register for YEL insurance. That’s the only thing we won’t do for you. Everything else is taken care of by us.
Will I lose my right to apply for a startup grant if I work as a light entrepreneur?
No, you will not. Quite the opposite – being a successful light entrepreneur is likely to be seen as a very positive thing when starting your own business and applying for a startup grant.
Can I work as a light entrepreneur in more than one industry?

Yes, you can work in as many industries as you want and invoice all of them through our service.

Official matters in a nutshell
As a light entrepreneur, you must take into account the following official matters:
  • VAT (usually 24%) added to your invoices
  • Health insurance contribution (1.53%)
  • Tax prepayment according to your tax card
  • YEL insurance if you invoice more than €8063.57 per year
  • Business ID for invoicing
When you use the Laskutan.com service, in addition to invoicing, possible debt collection and accident insurance, we also take care of the above-mentioned tax and health insurance payments as well as any related paperwork. We use our own business ID for your invoices, which means you don’t need to worry about that, either. YEL insurance is the only thing you need to take care of yourself when you work as a light entrepreneur through our service. You can choose the insurance company yourself.

Our invoicing system takes into account all official requirements, and we can help you, for example, in choosing the right VAT rate for your products or services. Feel free to get to know the system before making your decision to become a light entrepreneur. For example, we can help you choose the right VAT rate for your product/service. YEL – the entrepreneur’s pension insurance
A full-time light entrepreneur is required to take out YEL insurance if the following conditions are met:
  • Your income exceeds €8063.57 per year (2021), and
  • The duration of your business activities exceeds 4 months.
You can decide which company you want to take your insurance from and how you handle it. You can find more information and information leaflets from our invoicing system.

If you work full-time as a light entrepreneur, we also recommend that you join the Entrepreneur Fund. The amount of earnings-related daily allowance paid by the unemployment fund is based on your confirmed YEL income. As a rule of thumb, the higher your YEL income is, the better your unemployment security will also be.
You should prepare for unemployment in at least one of the following ways:
  • Join the Entrepreneurship Fund and take out YEL insurance with a minimum annual income of €13,247. You will need to have been a member for at least 15 months to get the full benefit. Don’t worry about the minimum membership requirement. The right of post-protection means that you can get unemployment security from your old unemployment fund during this time.
  • If you’re not a member of the unemployment fund or registered for YEL insurance, take out some other kind of insurance against unemployment.
If neither of these cases is true in your situation, you can still apply for the labour market subsidy from Kela.
Light entrepreneurship in different life situations
You can work as a light entrepreneur in all life situations, whether you are unemployed, on parental leave, a student, or even a pensioner. However, you should note that it may affect the benefits you receive.
Light entrepreneurship doing gigs, part-time or full-time?
As a light entrepreneur, you can invoice individual gigs or commissions or work part-time or even full-time, invoicing at intervals that suit you best. As a light entrepreneur, you can work as little or as much as you like. Our service fee is always invoice-specific instead of, for example, a monthly subscription, which means you can do just as much or as little work as you want without having to worry about running costs.

If you work as an employee, you can sell your expertise part-time on the side and let the Laskutan.com service handle all the paperwork related to invoicing and payroll, including official payments and notifications.

If you later find that you have enough customers to work full-time as an entrepreneur, you can easily start your own company at any time. There’s no need to cancel your light entrepreneurship, because there are no regular payments or obligations.
Unemployment security for the light entrepreneur
Full-time
If you work full-time as a light entrepreneur, we also recommend that you join the Entrepreneur Fund.
Part-time or gig-based
If you work as a light entrepreneur part-time or do individual gigs, we recommend considering joining an unemployment fund for employees. If you work as a part-time entrepreneur or do gigs on the side of other employment and you’re already a member of an unemployment fund as an employee, you’ll receive an earnings-related daily allowance from them once you have met the requirements. As a part-time entrepreneur, you have the right to an earnings-related daily allowance when you have worked as an employee for a total of six months and done paid work for at least 18 hours a week.

If you haven’t worked this much alongside your entrepreneurship, you won’t be eligible for receiving an earnings-related daily allowance from the unemployment fund. However, you can apply for the labour market subsidy from Kela.

If you become unemployed, you can continue your work as a part-time entrepreneur, but the work you do may reduce your benefit. In this case, you can receive an adjusted unemployment benefit. If you only do a little work as a light entrepreneur, it probably won’t affect your benefits.

What is a commission relationship?
A commission relationship has the following key characteristics:
  • The light entrepreneur has the right to decide when and how much they want to work – there are no regular working hours.
  • The light entrepreneur works independently and is not subject to supervision.
  • The work is done with the purpose of income.
  • The light entrepreneur can have multiple customer relationships at the same time.
  • The light entrepreneur bears a certain risk and responsibility.
Not all of these characteristics need to be met. The most important thing is that the light entrepreneur works independently for the purpose of earning an income. You can read more here: Finnish Centre for Pensions.

Please note that commission relationships are not suitable for all professions or jobs. More information on the Tax Administration’s instructions on the differences between commission and employment relationships can be found here.

It’s advisable to make a written agreement about a commission, although spoken agreements are also possible. You can use our agreement template and modify it to suit your needs. The template is available in the invoicing system, and you can download it as no cost or commitment to our service.

Laskutan.com service handles the light entrepreneur’s payment transactions as well as any official matters and paperwork. This doesn’t constitute an employment relationship between you as the light entrepreneur and the Laskutan.com service as defined by Employment Contracts Act.
Contents of a commission agreement
It’s not always necessary to make a written agreement, as you can also make a spoken agreement of the work. However, to avoid any misunderstandings, written agreements are advisable.
  • Agreement parties
  • Commission and its duration
  • Schedule and reporting
  • Payment amount and invoicing basis
  • Reimbursement of expenses
  • Payment term and invoicing
  • Termination of the commission
  • Additional terms
  • Responsibilities
  • Other matters
  • Amendment and transfer of the agreement
  • Invalidity of the agreement
  • Applicable law and place of jurisdiction
  • Signatures
Note: You should always create your written agreements in such a way that it isn’t possible for one party to make unanimous changes to it afterwards. You can find an agreement template in our invoicing system. You can download it at no cost or commitment to our service.

When you’re ready to invoice, we’ll handle it as a single transaction and pay your wages directly onto your account. Even then there’s no commitment and there are no other costs to you.
Can I get job offers through Laskutan.com?
I’ve been thinking of ending my own business. Can I continue selling my services as a light entrepreneur through Laskutan.com?

Yes, you can. You can even continue using the same marketing name. However, we recommend informing your customers of your transition into light entrepreneurship and your plans to invoice through the Laskutan.com service. Your invoices would look a bit different after the change, and the business ID in them would also be our business ID instead of the one you used for your company.

Is my information secure on Laskutan.com?

I’m glad you asked! Everything is secure. We use a closed-source server, which keeps all your data safe.

How much should I invoice?

When determining the pricing of your services, you should remember that you won’t receive the total invoiced amount to yourself, because some fees will be deducted from it.

When estimating the appropriate amount to invoice, be sure to consider the following payments:
Authority fees:
  • Value added tax (usually 24%)
  • Health insurance contribution (1.53%)
  • Tax prepayment according to your tax card
  • YEL insurance payment if you invoice more than €8063.57 per year (please note that this isn’t handled through Laskutan.com but needs to be paid separately)
Service fee:
  • The Laskutan.com service fee is 5% of the invoiced amount before VAT. VAT will not be added to our service fee. You can easily calculate the amount of our service fee (€) using the formula 0.05 x the sum of your invoice before VAT.

When you use the Laskutan.com service, we take care of the official payments related to payroll, such as taxes and the health insurance contribution, as well as our own service fee. The YEL insurance payment is the only thing you need to take care of yourself when you work as a light entrepreneur through our service.

You can use the income calculator on the home page if you want to estimate a suitable amount to invoice. The calculator shows how much money you will get after the taxes, the health insurance contribution and our service fee (5%) have been deducted. Please note that the starting amount entered into the calculator is without VAT, which means it’s not the total amount that your customer will pay. The customer will also need to pay value added tax (VAT), which is usually 24%.

All of this is taken into account in the invoicing system. We’ll help you choose the correct VAT rate and calculate the correct sum for you.

Feel free to get to know the system before making your decision to become a light entrepreneur.

What’s the minimum invoicing amount?

The minimum invoicing amount is €1,200. If you need to send a lot of small invoices, we can agree on a practice where we bundle several invoices into one (however min. €1,200) and pay your wages for all of them at the same time. This way you can invoice your customers immediately after finishing the work, but we’ll pay your wages once the minimum invoicing amount has been met.

Do I need to make a separate notification of starting work?

No, you don’t. You can send invoices to your customers through Laskutan.com whenever it suits you best.
